"Spirituality in the modern age is the theme that unites elements as disparate as lo-fi folk, hip-hop, and Tuvinian throat singing on this limited edition split EP by the two Midwestern outfits. The lucky few who managed to score this on cassette already know that Kid Primitive's side B tackles the topic far more effectively than Jookabox on side A. KP's "The Sun (Dance)" will have yoga fanatics saying "om" long after their time on the mat, and the tight flow of "Lightworkers Manifesto" is equally thought provoking and mind-blowing. While Jookabox's end of this release bounces around in tone and subject matter, it has its moments as well: "Giuseppi's Pass" toys around with fun, B52's-style pop, if Nick Cave had taken over the band; "Daughter Of Dreams" juxtaposes stream of consciousness spoken word against a hauntingly simple melody." "Jookabox and Kid Primitive Family will share an extremely limited release from Joyful Noise Recordings. Limited to only 100 cassettes copies and featuring a digital download... Side A features Indianapolis band Jookabox rediscovering its folk roots. Jookabox just released its third record, Dead Zone Boys, via Asthmatic Kitty/Joyful Noise, and it is a far funk-laden cry from these new (and re-imagined) intimate tracks. The experimental, home-recordings include collaboration with Lisa Berlin, Dave Segedy and John Kill. Side B is Kid Primitive Family's attempt to expand your mind. With their Tuvinian throat singing, raw percussion and layered echoes, the Chicago-based outfit gets all transcendental on its half of the tape." "When's the last time you listened to your Walkman? You know, the cassette one. It may be time to dust it off and pop in some fresh AAs, because Jookabox and Kid Primitive Family are putting out a limited edition split cassette via Joyful Noise... with layered vocals and drifting hip hop rhythms populating its tripped out soundscapes. Snatch up your copy now, and go locate your nearest friend with the shittiest car and see if his cassette player won't eat your Jookabox/Kid Primitive Family tape." "light the joss-sticks, turn down the lights, turn on the larva-lamp, lay back and enjoy the ride." |
