Eraserhead was a life-changing experience for me as a teenager. I related heavily to the character of Henry Spencer, feeling so lost and confused in the world. And like Henry, I also worked in a printing factory. I found a used copy of the soundtrack album and one of the first songs I ever recorded in my bedroom back in the ‘90s was a cover of "In Heaven." I’d probably be embarrassed to hear it now 30 years later but fortunately Dale Crover, Thor Harris and Steve Patrick have helped me finish a new version which I’m not embarrassed by.
I owe everything to David Lynch who inspired me as a young artist and later gave me much encouragement and support when I lived in Los Angeles. We had many show-and-tell sessions accompanied by many cups of coffee during my time in LA. It was a very special time. It’s almost impossible to express how grateful I am to have someone I admire so much be so helpful and kind to me.
About the recording:
I was excited to get Dale and Thor together again as they are two of my all-time favourite drummers and percussionists (they were previously heard together on the Stranger EP by Dumb Numbers in 2017). They are both big fans of David Lynch and Eraserhead so it didn’t take too much convincing to get them involved.
The final part of the process was transferring the song to a 2 inch master tape and experimenting with pitching it down in the analog realm. Tyler and I experimented with different speeds and decided the song sounded best pitched down 6 semitones (half an octave). I wanted it to sound like one of those unofficial ‘slowed+reverb’ remixes on YouTube but achieved without the use of computers.
