CocoRosie Joins Joyful Noise
Today I am gratified and excited to announce that (1) JNR has signed the legendary and immensely influential band CocoRosie, and (2) their new LP will be coming to your door in early 2025. To give you at least a taste of what’s coming down the pipe, we are sharing the new track and music video, “Least I Have You” (you can preview the video here).
I’ve been in love with this band for a long time. As authentic innovators they acted as a primary “gateway artist” for me - drawing me into a relationship of awe and reverence for the roster of Touch & Go Records (back when JNR was still an unrealized dream in my 19-year old brain).
Consisting of two sisters, Bianca Casady (aka “Coco”) and Sierra Casady (aka “Rosie”), CocoRosie have already demonstrated themselves to be delightful creative partners during the process of putting this album together. They came to JNR after a wilderness period following their departure from Sub Pop with a diverse labyrinth of unreleased (and unfinished) music. In a decisive early discussion, I proposed that they simply send me ALL the music/demos they had recorded, and allow me to construct an album (whittling down the songs and sequence into something JNR would be proud to release). I offered to take on this project prior to even signing the band, with the thought that it would result in one of two ways: they would hate it and tell me to fuck off, or they would love it - in which case I would know that they were the right fit for JNR. Thankfully, the latter occurred, and we’re all thrilled about what’s come out of this partnership.
For me, CocoRosie’s early work is ‘proleptic’—it’s the thing before the thing is a thing. In the early aughts, they were writing songs whose implications would only become evident a decade later. They have been highly influential to a diverse aray of artists (ANOHNI / Antony & the Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, Chance the Rapper - hell, even Lou Barlow and Tim Kinsella love them). They have never become complacent as artists. And if one thing is clear in my mind: they belong at JNR.
