Get to know Andrew March of Crosss, JNR's newest artist

  • How did CROSSS come about? 

I wanted to start a band with my friend Christian Simmons (Each Other, Sheer Agony, Lantern, Play Guitar), party because he's a rad drummer and wasn't drumming much at the time, because he was in a band called Play Guitar, which he played guitar in. So the name is after him : Christian ... Crosss. At first I just tried to write whatever would be fun for a drummer to play, and now, many years later, I probably do the same thing. I like drums a lot, and I focus on that a lot when I write.
 

  • What's the scene in Toronto like currently? 

There are a lot of inspiring bands in Toronto for me, like HSY, Surinam, Odonis Odonis, Whimm, Soupcans, New Fries, Coarse Language, and lots of others. It's a pretty amazing city.

  • I know you’re from Halifax originally. Are the other members from the same area?

There have been a few different lineups for Crosss, and the first several lineups were all Haligonians (people from Halifax). Currently, I am the only Haligonian. Jesse and Michelle are from Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario.

  • You’ve have been touring a lot since your previous release (which kicks ass btw). How has the tour been so far? 

The release tour for LO was one of the best tours I've ever done. It was 8 months long. We went across Canada more than 2 times, and across the USA twice as well. Part of the tour was with Built to Spill, which was a life-changing experience. Part of it was with METZ who we love. 

  • What can you tell us about the new album you’re working on?

Both of our last LP's were recordings we made ourselves. We even mastered Obsidian Spectre alone. We are planning to record with Chris Koltay, so that will be a lot better.

  • If you could only eat one brand of cereal for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I like granola, and I just discovered this sprouted grain granola from a company called Ezekiel 4:9. I like it because, it's so hard and crunchy, you can't even eat it without letting it soak for a while, like you would chip a tooth, so, you have to let it soak and it turns into porridge basically. But its so delicious and ya, such good food. Also its a recipe from the bible so that's something?? I dunno.

  • As a Canadian, what are your overall thoughts on the US presidential election?

I had a daydream today where Bernie and Trump were neck in neck, and Trump decided to co-opt Bernie's rhetoric, but of course, give it an extreme, violent twist, Trump won, but in the process, things got out of control, and the USA ended up running headlong into a bloody anti-capitalist revolution, like a French Revolution on Wall Street basically. I watch a lot of Bernie Sanders videos, and I feel pretty happy that I am alive at this time in history.
